How PRF Hair Restoration works

PRF hair restoration works by harnessing the regenerative potential of platelets in the blood. A small sample of the patient's blood is extracted and placed in our centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma. The concentrated platelet-rich fibrin is then injected into the scalp, particularly in areas experiencing hair loss or thinning. The growth factors in the PRF stimulate the hair follicles, promoting hair growth and improving hair thickness. The procedure helps to rejuvenate the scalp, encourage blood circulation, and support the health of existing hair follicles, leading to enhanced hair density and quality over time.

The advantages of PRF vs PRP

PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin) offers several advantages over PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) due to its higher concentration of growth factors and longer-lasting effects. PRF contains approximately 10 times the concentration of platelets that is found within the body, whereas PRP contains roughly 2 to 5 times. PRF is a second-generation platelet concentrate that provides a more stable release of growth factors over a prolonged period, resulting in enhanced cellular regeneration. Additionally, PRF does not contain anticoagulants and is completely natural, meaning that there is no chance of adverse reaction.

PRF Hair Restoration after a hair transplant

If a client has lost an area of hair more than five years ago, there is a chance that the hair follicles are no longer present to be reactivated from their dormant state using PRF. Around 30% of my clients who I see for PRF Hair Restoration have recently had a hair transplant, where they are usually given a complementary session of PRP post-procedure, to help maximise the effectiveness of the transplant. On their return home, they are left to find a clinic offering these services. Being the leading provider of PRF in the area between Birmingham and Bristol, many clients come to me after hearing of the benefits of PRF over PRP, where we are able to initiate their treatment course to regrow the blood vessels in the scalp, enabling the newly relocated hair follicles to receive the necessary supply of nutrients to survive. Relocating hair follicles into an unhealthy scalp is similar to that of planting plants into an unfertile garden, they will only survive for so long.

Treatment Information.

  • If you have had thinning, receding or total loss of an area of hair within the last 5 years, there is a chance that the hair follicles are still present, but are currently lay dormant, which can be reactivated by placing localised PRF injections into the scalp.

    If you have areas of hair which were lost greater than 5 years ago, it may be more appropriate to look at getting a hair transplant to relocate hair follicles to that area. After which, PRF can be used to maximise the effectiveness and longevity of the transplant, by promoting a nutrient rich environment within the scalp for the newly relocated hair follicles to thrive upon.

    Due to the nature of the treatment, anyone who has a personal history of active cancer, blood-related conditions, such as anaemia or leukaemia, severe auto-immune disorders, any active infection or an active smoker, would not be appropriate for PRF.

  • Three PRF treatments, spaced monthly, are typically required to start seeing thicker existing hair and the growth of new hair, at around week 12. Many clients choose to go for a course of six treatments.

  • The results from PRF Hair Restoration can be maintained by receiving a single top-up treatment every 12 months.

  • On your first appointment, we have a discussion about your treatment plan and run through the necessary paperwork. We will then take a small amount of blood, which is then placed into our centrifuge, after which the PRF is then extracted from the tubes of separated blood, which is then injected into the scalp. The injection process takes no longer than 10 minutes and uses very fine needles. You are then able to leave and carry on with your day.

  • It is advised to avoid alcohol or blood thinning medications, such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen for 48 hours before your appointment. Stay well hydrated and eat well on the lead up to your appointment.

  • After your PRF Hair Restoration treatment, it is advised to avoid touching the treated area for 6 hours. You may wash the area after 12 hours with a gentle shampoo or body wash. Try to avoid any intense exercise that may cause you to sweat, saunas, swimming or very hot showers, direct UV exposure, alcohol or any blood thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen for 48 hours post-treatment.
